BRUSSELS — Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said that the EU might grant both Georgians and Ukrainians visa-free access to the EU’s Schengen zone this year. Rinkevics, whose country took over the EU’s rotating presidency in January 2015, told RFE/RL that both Ukraine and Georgia had a chance to get visa liberalization at the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga in May of this year. The countries have to undertake several reforms, such as increased judicial cooperation with the EU, before being granted visa-free travel. The major obstacle for Ukrainians to travel free to the EU is shortage of biometric documents. EU Ambassador to Ukraine Jan Tombinski also said that Ukraine is “months away” from being able to travel freely to the 26 nations that make up the Schengen Zone within the EU by year-end.
